Ever since the 19 th century, the patchwork divas have been working to promote all sorts of quilting designs and unique sewing creations. Back then, the ladies just used to do it for fun sake, without ever thinking that one day sewing patterns and quilting designs would be high in demand. When I said “promote”, I just meant those creators sharing their stuff in their nomad quilting clubs – something just among friends, and that’s all.
Fast forward to the today, the internet age, to see that quilting designs and unique sewing creations have become a profession for many individuals. Regardless of the fact whether you’re a man or a woman, if your love for sewing has been budding inside you since the first person created something crafty in 1800s, you have the right to make unique quilted treasures.
However, for newbies, there’s a dilemma. Newbies don’t know:
• How to sew unique creations
• How to share their creations
• How to make money off of their sewed designs once they’re fully complete
Whether it’s a double nine patch block work, or a simple looking Carolina Lily Block, you have to start from the very basics. The basics lie at the core of each quilting design or unique sewing creations book. Now no one is going to, especially this article, shove down a couple of salesy book reports down your throat. If you want to buy them, it’s your decision, but it will be something worth it.
If you don’t have the money, or the will to purchase a book, then go ahead and join a decent sewing class. Apart from not looking too scammy, the sewing classes are a great way to get connected with people who wish to learn the same things as you.
You’ll also have tons of opportunities to share your ideas, quilting designs and block patterns, while getting to learn things from others as well. And don’t forget to remember the cardinal rule of sewing:
“Sewing unique creations is only possible if you’re a strict follower of learning by doing process”. Practice as much as you can, and it’ll all come to you as a second nature.
Good news for you is that the internet has different sewing lessons to offer. There’re proper online classes (which are usually prerecorded) to guide participants through a step by step process. They’re taught different sewing jargons, terms, definitions, and practically everything that has to do with becoming an expert in this field.
You’ll also require tools of trade. Call them a sewing machine, a quilting block, needles, threads or anything – Without proper tools; you won’t be able to go too far with your imaginative creations. Once again, I suggest that once you’re in the middle of the learning process; get your hands on a sewing machine/ sewing kit through online retailers.
The machine comes with quite a bit of hassles of its own. These so called “hassles” come in the form of machine maintenance, which is not really hard to keep up with if you ask me. You just need to make sure that the thing is well oiled and doesn’t need any repairing or stuff like that.
Finally, there’s the issue of how to share unique sewing creations. Well, there’re a couple of ways to do that. First off, regardless of the fact whether you were a member of an online sewing class, you can create your accounts at different forums and promotional websites that appreciate hand crafted material.
From then on, you should participate in sharing your unique sewing creations through JPEG attachments. In return, not only will you receive constructive criticism and an equal amount of appreciation, you’ll also get that much needed exposure.
The second method of sharing your sewed stuff is through local magazines. Quilting magazines have a knack for featuring beautiful designs that go along with their monthly or seasonal themes. Your work will be seen by thousands of people, with most of them being potential buyers and employers. But then again, the actual money making process is thoroughly dependent on the level of your expertise.
Just keep one thing in mind: don’t give up. Start with simple stuff like tote bags, baby quilts, cross work patches and simple basics. Finally when you’ve learned the ropes, you can then move on towards more challenging stuff. There’re no short cuts in this field and all those sewing maestros that you admire, they earned their way through hard work and pure untiring dedication.
